Sorare reimagines the way fans interact with football by leveraging blockchain’s decentralized nature and the concept of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). NFTs, which gained significant attention in the art world, are digital assets that represent ownership or proof of authenticity of a unique item.

Sorare utilizes NFTs to represent and trade digital collectible player cards. These cards serve as the cornerstone of the platform, allowing users to build their fantasy teams by acquiring and managing these virtual assets.

In short, the process begins with users signing up on the Sorare platform and receiving a number of free player cards (including a free Tier 3 Limited card) to kickstart their collection. Sorare offers an immersive and, for some, quite addictive gaming experience that combines the excitement of traditional football with the thrill of collecting and managing digital player cards.

Game Rules

Below find a quick summary of the game rules (we will go through them in bigger detail in the latter parts of this Sorare review)

1. Card Acquisition – players start by acquiring digital player cards, which represent real-life professional football (soccer) players from various leagues around the world. These cards can be obtained through auctions, transfers from other users, or by winning them in weekly competitions.
2. Team Formation – Each week, users create a team by selecting 5 player cards from their collection. The said team consists of a goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder, a forward, and an extra player that can play any position but the goalkeeper. The team formation can be adjusted before each matchday, allowing users to strategize based on real-life fixtures.
3. GameWeeks and Scoring – Sorare aligns with the schedules of real-life football leagues. During designated game weeks, the performance of the selected players in their actual matches determines the points earned by the corresponding digital player cards. The scoring system considers various factors like goals, assists, clean sheets, and other statistical achievements.
4. Competitive Leagues – Sorare offers different competitive leagues to cater to the preferences and skill levels of players. There are global leagues, region-specific leagues, and even private leagues where users can compete with their friends or specific communities. Users can climb up the ranks by earning points based on the performance of their digital player cards.
5. Trading and Marketplace – Sorare has a vibrant marketplace where users can buy and sell digital player cards. At the beginning of 2023, Sorare finally introduced its users to the so-called dark mode design – a feature Sorare managers had been crying out for quite some time. The dark mode boasts a black-to-dark-grey background across all pages on the website, vastly improving the legibility of all the cards as well as more detailed data such as players’ performances, prices, etc.

Despite all the positives, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to design and the user interface. Sorare constantly asks its users to report any bugs and features they would like to introduce to the platform and, as long as they make sense and are really useful to the general audience, the chances of them introducing the changes are quite good.

I have already had first-hand experience working with the Sorare team on bettering, or should I say fixing one of the features, namely the squad filtering which wasn’t working properly. From the moment I introduced the idea and explained what needs fixing, it took their team no more than 48 hours to make the changes live.

As long as the platform continues to work closely with its users on bettering the experience on the site, the user interface can only keep improving – and this is great.

Sorare Cards

One of the most captivating aspects of Sorare is its unique player card system. Each player on the platform possesses a digital card that represents their real-life performance in football matches.

Card Scarcities

These cards come in different scarcity levels (Common, Limited, Rare, Super Rare, and Unique) providing an element of rarity and collectibility that appeals to both football fans and card collectors.

Each scarcity has a different maximum number of card releases per season:

• Common – the only 100% free scarcity with an unlimited number of cards available per season
• Limited – considered the entry-level scarcity, it has a maximum of 1,000 cards per player released every campaign
• Rare – they are up to 100 Rare cards released per season
• Super Rare – this scarcity has just 10 cards released per season
• Unique – as you can probably guess from the name, this scarcity has just one player card per season

Fair to say, the cards look really good across all scarcities and to keep the true collectors excited, every new season sees the release of cards with a fresh design.

Naturally, the release of new cards doesn’t mean that the old season versions lose their utility.

One of the best things about the platform is that once you purchase the card, you are its owner forever.

And as long as the footballer (or the NBA star) your card represents is still playing in one of the licensed Sorare leagues, his points are scored as normal and you can continue to use it to compete for the weekly prizes.

Card XP

To further fuel the competition amongst Sorare managers, you will be collecting XP points for all of your cards.

Freshly-minted cards for the current season always come with a guaranteed XP bonus of 5%, meaning that any score your player secures during a given game week is multiplied by that additional 5%.

And anytime you use your card, whether in a game week lineup or in a training lineup (we will explain the difference further down the article), the card continues to gain XP points.

XP Levels

Newly-minted Sorare cards begin with a card level of 0 (with an already-applied 5% bonus) and can reach a maximum level of 20.

The card rating levels function on a logarithmic scale, which means that it’s quite easy (and quick) to get from Level 0 to Level 1, but it takes time and effort to move from Level 10 to Level 20.

In other words, the higher the card level, the more XP points are necessary to advance to the next card level.

For example, your player card can reach Level 1 after just 1-2 games but achieving Level 20 would take around 2-3 seasons of regular matches and training.

Every level for your Sorare card results in a 0.5% multiplier boost, which is used with the player’s Decisive and All-Around Score to generate the final Player Score.

That implies the greatest multiplier boost you may obtain for your card by earning XP is 10% (20 levels / 0.5% = 10%).

For example, if your weekly match Player Score is 80 points but your Card Rating Level is 10 (multiplier 5%), your final Player Score will be 80 + (80 * 5%) = 84.

The bonus multipliers are different for each scarcity:

• Level 0 Limited & Rare cards begin with a 0% bonus and can increase to 10% at Level 20
• Level 0 Super Rare cards begin with a 20% bonus and increase to 30% at Level 20
• Level 0 Unique cards begin with a 40% bonus and can increase to 50% at Level 20

As previously stated, Sorare issues new player cards each season and each from the current season also receives a 5% multiplier boost due to their freshness (this is how Sorare hopes to motivate managers to acquire new cards annually).

New Feature: Card Collection Scores

Starting in May 2023, Sorare introduced a new way to reward managers who built proper card collections.

Now even more than ever, acquiring and assembling a squad of players becomes a highly strategic challenge as you aim to create the most formidable team possible.

In short, the new card collection score feature means that the more Sorare cards of a given team and a given scarcity you have, the more XP bonus will be applied to all the cards in each of those collections. Here it’s worth mentioning that every season a new collection will be released for every club licensed on the platform.

As an example, a Celtic team will have separate collections for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 campaigns and all the additional XP scores will be distributed only across cards from the same season.

The maximum collection score is 750 which results in an additional 5% Sorare Collection Bonus on top of all the XP bonuses you’ve collected by utilizing your card in gameweeks and training.

As you can probably see by now, becoming successful at Sorare and really enjoying the perks of the platform to the fullest is not only about owning cards but actually being strategic when it comes to improving their power and performance.

While for true football geeks and those with a lot of free time on their hands it’s definitely a huge positive (since it improves competitiveness and helps differentiate between the top managers on the platform), new users might be a bit overwhelmed by the whole mechanism – at least while making their first steps in the world of fantasy sports.

Scoring System

If you felt like the number of ingredients contributing to the final XP score of your Sorare card was a bit overwhelming, it’s unlikely to get any easier now.

That’s because we are diving into the Sorare Scoring Matrix, the one and only scoring mechanism of the platform.

Loved by many (me included) and loathed by others, the Matrix is where all the magic happens as far as the performance of your cards is concerned.

While at first many struggle to fully understand the way the Matrix works, its complexity is what actually makes the game more fun, at least for the users who are serious about being successful on the platform in the long run.

As in the case of the XP bonuses, it will take you some time (and probably some mistakes as well) before you fully grasp the way the Scoring Matrix works. Again, this indicates that Sorare isn’t the easiest of games – at least not in the beginning. But being fair you probably have to spend some time at any game to actually get good at it.

The performance score can range from 0 and 100 points, with 0 being an unmitigated disaster and 100 representing a real match-deciding performance.

A player will also receive 0 points if his participation in the game is listed as DNP (Did Not Play).

Two types of scores contribute to the final score:

• Decisive Score
• All-Around Score

The player’s ultimate score is Decisive Score (DS) + All-Around Score (AAS) [or + zero if AAS is less than 0 (negative)].

Now, let’s have a closer look at both.

Decisive Score

As the name implies, this score is determined by significant, game-changing contributions.

Every player starts at Decisive Score Level 0.

Level 0 is equivalent to 35 points for a player who starts the game and 25 points for a player who enters the field during play (whether it occurs in the fifth or 90th minute).

The player’s Decisive Score can either increase with decisive, positive contributions or fall with decisive, negative contributions.

A player can have a maximum positive Level of 5 and a maximum negative Level of -3.

Importantly, regardless of whether a player’s All-Around Score metrics are positive or negative, if he ends the game on Level 1 (for instance, he made 0 negative contributions and scored a goal), he will have a minimum score of 60.

His ultimate Player Score cannot go below 60 if he manages a -5 All-Around Score, but if it is more than 0, it will only increase his total Player Score.

Naturally, all levels above 0 are subject to the same regulation.

All-Around Score

The crucial Score is easier to manage and is based on only 12 crucial contributions to the game, whereas the All-Around Score is based on, well, everything else.

It contains 40 various match occurrences (passes, tackles, blocks, and so on) that are being tracked by Opta (the premier source of live sports data) and Sorare’s analysis team.

Each event has a variable amount of importance, and each event can have a varied weighting based on the player’s position. For example, a won tackle for a defender or midfielder will get him 3 points, but because it is not a forward’s task, the reward is 0.

Sorare Competitions

Sorare managers take part in weekly tournaments, competing against other managers from around the globe. The objective is to score the highest number of points based on your players’ real-life performances in actual matches.

The tournaments are grouped into two separate Gameweeks during each week, one known as the weekend Gameweek (running from Friday to Tuesday), and the other known as the midweek Gameweek (running from Tuesday to Friday).

As you have already learned, the scoring system takes into account factors such as goals, assists, clean sheets, and other key statistics, ensuring that the game rewards skillful team management and a deep understanding of the sport.

The competitions are based on scarcities, meaning that each card scarcity has its own group of weekly tournaments, as well as the regions. There are also two additional competition categories for players under the age of 23 and the legends of the game.

Let’s now quickly go through the current competition types on Sorare.

Scarcity categorization

Aside from the Common card tournaments which we will discuss in the Free-to-Play review section further down the article, there are five major tournament types to pick from.

• Limited Card tournaments – if you have at least 5 Limited cards, your entry will be allowed. Money prizes and cards of the Limited scarcity
• Rare Card tournaments – as the name implies, you need Rare cards to enter (5 minimum). Prizes are either money or Rare cards.
• Super Rare tournaments – To participate in these events, you must have a team of Super Rare players (again, the minimum number of Super Rare cards is 5). The prizes are either Super Rare rarity cards or money.
• Unique Card tournaments – the most prestigious events in Sorare, and a 5-player team of Unique cards is required. The awards are either Unique cards or money.
• Mixed Card tournaments – This last type of event permits various card combinations. These tournaments provide both card and cash prizes. The card awards vary depending on the competition (you might earn different scarcity levels depending on your team’s performance and the specific tournament).

Regional categorization

Scarcity tournaments are further grouped into different competitions based on the region in which they take place.

• All-Star: Allows the use of players from any real-life league licensed by Sorare.
• Champion Europe: Permits the use of players from the top five leagues in Europe, namely the German Bundesliga, English Premier League, French Ligue 1, Italian Serie A, and Spanish Liga Santander. What’s important to note, each of the top five leagues has separate competitions exclusively for players based in those leagues.
• Challenger Europe: Available for player cards from “lesser” European leagues, including the Austrian Bundesliga, Norwegian Elliteserien, Holland’s Eredivisie, Belgian Jupiler League, Portuguese Primeira Liga, Scottish Premiership, Croatian SuperSport NHL, Turkish Spor Toto Süper Lig, Danish Superliga, as well as all major European competitions (including playoffs) such as UEFA Europa League, Champions League, and Conference League.
• Second Division Europe: Allows the use of players from popular second tiers in Europe, such as the English Championship, and German 2. Bundesliga, French Ligue 2, and Spanish LaLiga Smartbank.
• Champion America: Open for cards from all main leagues in South and Central America, such as the MLS or Argentinian Primera Division.
• Champion Asia: Open for cards from all main leagues in Asia, such as the J League or K1.

Age categorization

In terms of age categorization, there are Sorare tournaments restricted to young talents.

These tournaments only allow cards of players aged 23 or younger. Such cards are marked with a navy blue “23” sticker and include players whose maximum age is 23 or below as of June each year.

The U23 tournaments are particularly competitive. Many managers want to get their hands on well-performing young talents since they have at least a decade of utility on the platform.

Form categorization

Capped modes are available for those who prefer investing more time in applying strategies and scouting players.

In short, you have a restricted number of points you can distribute throughout your five-player team based on their average score (form) from their last 15 fixtures.

Currently, there are three capped modes to choose from:

• Capped 220: The total team score cannot exceed 220 points based on the performance of the player cards in the last 15 games. The team must consist of 4 cards of the same scarcity and one card from a lower scarcity level. No card XP bonuses are applicable.
• Capped 240: The limit is set to 240 points, and all 5 cards must be of the same scarcity level. No card XP bonuses are applicable.
• Capped 270: Considered the “beast” mode, the points limit is set to 270, allowing the fielding of all your in-form stars. Again, all cards must share the same scarcity level. This is the only capped competition that includes the XP bonuses of your cards.

Legends

The Legends tournament permits the use of Legend cards, which are special edition collectibles of some of the biggest stars who have retired from the game.

This competition is available only for two scarcities, Limited and Rare.

To participate, you need to possess at least one Legend card. In a single competition, you can field a maximum of three Legend cards, with the remaining 2-4 cards in your lineup being players from the same scarcity level.

Prizes & Rewards

If you are a football fan and/or a collector, there is really nothing we can point a finger at when it comes to the prize pools and rewards.

They are impressive and getting better with time which is a very promising sign when it comes to the future of the platform and the number of new users it can lure.

When Sorare began its journey to the top of the fantasy sports food chain in 2019, the only type of reward waiting for its users was more cards.

Needless to say, the prize pool and its diversity is much more exciting nowadays.

As of 2023, there are four types of rewards waiting on Sorare managers every week:

Card Rewards

Being a card game, it’s not a surprise that card rewards are still the foundation of most competitions you’ll find on the platform.

As we already mentioned, each card scarcity has its own group of competitions. In most cases, Limited competitions will hand out Limited card rewards, Rare competitions – Rare card rewards, and so on and so forth.

However, selected competitions across all scarcities, on top of offering the same scarcity rewards, also include card prizes of the next scarcity.

By doing so, they allow Sorare managers to progress through the divisions. The platform’s dream scenario is to see newbies competing in the Limited divisions slowly but surely work their way up to the very top (the Unique division).

Depending on the game week and the scarcity level, the top 5% to 15% of users participating in the competitions win card rewards. Of course, the higher your place in a given leaderboard, the better card you’re likely to win.

Current rewards are grouped into six Tiers (from 0 to 5) and as you can probably guess, the Tier 0 cards, also known as Star cards, are handed out to the very top participants (less than 1%). The more you move down the leaderboard, the less mouth-watering the rewards.

Cash rewards

On top of competing for new cards to improve your collection, you are also trying to win cash. As of now, the cash rewards are paid out in Ethereum and stored in your Ethereum wallet on Sorare.

After the 2023 changes to the cash reward system, now there is a much larger money pool waiting for the managers twice a week.

Before the latest changes, only the managers finishing each competition on the podium had the chance to win money. Needless to say, that was and still is quite a task.

Also, there was only one competition across all four scarcities (Rare All-Star) that paid out cash rewards for reaching certain thresholds of points.

Nowadays, the price rewards are much more attainable. On top of the podium places across all competitions, you can hunt for cash rewards in the following tournaments:

• All-Star (all scarcities) – depending on the scarcity, your place in the leaderboard, and the game week, you can win anywhere from $5 to $2,500
• Capped 240 (all scarcities) – regardless of how high you finish in the leaderboard, the Capped 240 competition pays out cash rewards for reaching a points threshold of 250. The current payouts are $5 for the Limited division, $50 for the Rare division, $250 for the Super Rare division, and $500 for the Unique division

Sorare Coins

The coins are the newest addition to the Sorare reward pool.

Sorare coins are the in-game currency that you can spend on a variety of items – from conditional training lineups to boosting the XP bonus of your cards to real-life fan items such as football shirts and Sorare merchandise.

The coins are paid out for reaching certain thresholds across all divisions and vary from 10 to 1,200 points per competition.

Real-Life Fan Experiences

Last but not least, the year 2023 saw the addition of real-life experiences to the prize pool.

These are limited-time events that happen throughout the year and are targeting fans of individual football clubs.

In short, you use the cards of your favorite players from your favorite clubs to compete for stuff such as signed shirts, open training sessions, meet-and-greet the team, VIP match tickets, etc.

Trading Aspect

Another subject that is worth touching upon is the trading aspect of Sorare.

Although for me personally, it’s not anywhere near as fun as competing with other managers with my fantasy lineups, many people find great joy (and sometimes really good profits) in trading the Sorare cards.

Like another form of trading, the main goal is to buy low and sell high.

For example, you can buy key players that are currently injured, and use your inside knowledge of transfers to invest in players that are about to get a big move in their careers or put your money into Under-23 goalkeepers that are on the verge of breaking into the first team.

Many Sorare managers use the trading system to build up their transfer budget and start buying the squad of their dreams to genuinely compete.

Enjoying profits on your trades has never been an easy task but recently it just got a bit tougher. Since May 2023, Sorare introduced a 5% market fee on all transactions between managers.

Free-to-Play Mode Review

To close the gameplay section of this Sorare review, we have to discuss the free-to-play mode which ideally should be the starting point for all newcomers.

The company advertises as a free-to-play platform and theoretically, we can’t argue with that. Investing money into Sorare is not a requirement – you can enjoy some of its perks completely cost-free.

The ideal scenario promoted in the Sorare progression ladder is that people can start their journey with free-to-play Common cards in order to win their first Limited cards and then work their way up the divisions.

In reality, however, it’s a really difficult thing to do.

Competing in the free-to-play Common Draft division, every week you are going head-to-head against more than 100,000 people. This would never be a problem if there were, let’s say, 2,000 Limited cards up for grabs for the new users. This would mean that between 1 to 2% of free-to-play users would get the chance to kickstart the process of building their Limited team.

However, only a fixed number of 300 users get Limited card rewards in the free-to-play competitions which, mathematically speaking, makes the task nearly impossible.

Although it’s hard to criticize Sorare for the number of free giveaways, we feel like the platform could be doing a lot better when it comes to the distribution of the first Limited cards to their new users. Competing for free is fun as long as you have a realistic chance of winning anything and, at least for now, this is not the case at Sorare.

Customer Support Review

Sorare’s customer support demonstrates a commitment to providing prompt and helpful assistance to its users, ensuring a positive gaming experience for all.

While not flawless, the platform’s support team is generally responsive and dedicated to addressing user concerns and inquiries in a timely manner.

One of the notable strengths of Sorare’s customer support is its responsiveness. When users encounter issues or have questions, the support team strives to provide timely and informative responses. When it comes to our own experience, the usual wait for a response is no longer than a few hours during weekdays – which is impressive considering the huge user base.

The platform offers two main channels for contacting support – direct email contact via support@sorare.zendesk.com or filling up the contact form in the “Submit a request” section of their website.

In terms of knowledge and expertise, Sorare’s support team possesses a good understanding of the platform’s mechanics and functionality. They are generally well-informed about the rules, card mechanics, and general gameplay aspects, allowing them to provide accurate and helpful guidance to users.

This expertise is essential, particularly for newcomers who may require guidance in navigating the platform and maximizing their gaming experience.

Moreover, Sorare has made efforts to establish a comprehensive knowledge base and frequently asked questions (FAQ) section on its website. These resources can be helpful in addressing common concerns and provide users with self-service options to find answers to their queries independently.

While Sorare’s customer support is generally commendable, there have been occasional reports of delays in response times, particularly during peak periods or when high volumes of inquiries are received. Some users have expressed frustration with the time it takes to receive a resolution to their issues. Addressing this concern by further optimizing their support processes and staffing levels during peak times would contribute to an even better user experience.

Additionally, while Sorare’s customer support team is generally proficient in addressing technical and gameplay-related inquiries, there may be room for improvement in their assistance with more complex or specific issues. Enhancing the depth of knowledge and training provided to support agents would enable them to handle a wider range of user concerns effectively.
