Sorare was created as an NFT fantasy football game but now also caters to fans of the NBA and MLB. 

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are digital assets that have distinct properties that distinguish them from one another. These can be one-of-a-kind artworks, in-game objects, or virtual souvenirs of real-life sportsmen, like in Sorare’s case.

The cards are available in five scarcity levels – Common, Limited, Rare, Ultra Rare, and Unique Rare. All are created on the Ethereum blockchain.

Depending on how you want to utilize the platform, you can either use the cards to compete in weekly tournaments, trade them for profit or simply keep them as collectibles. 

The cards can be won during tournaments or purchased from the game’s marketplace.

The game begins with a set of free cards of the Common scarcity, but if you want to compete in more sophisticated tournaments with bigger rewards, you’ll need to get rarer players.

All right, now let us walk you through the process of joining the platform.

After arriving on the Sorare homepage, click on the “Sign Up” button located in the top right-hand corner of your screen.

After clicking the button, a pop-up window will appear. There you have to provide your email address, the username you wish to use on the platform, as well as your phone number.

It’s pretty straightforward.

Free Cards Draft

These are silverish/whitish player cards that you can use in free-to-play competitions.

So, how can you get your hands on these cards with no work and no investment?

It’s simple.

During the onboarding process, you will be asked to select one of five available European leagues as the one you want to compete in.

Let’s assume that just like us, you are a fan of the English Premier League.

A budget of 400 points will then be given to you to spend on 8 Common Cards from that league (2 players for each position).

The procedure may then be repeated for the other four major European leagues, including Serie A, Ligue 1, La Liga, and Bundesliga.

This implies that without having to spend any money, you will instantly have 40 Common cards to play with (pun intended).

These cards have no value because they cannot be exchanged, but they can nevertheless teach you how to play the game for free with no risks attached.

Free Tournament(s)

You are allowed to play the game for free for as long as you like with Sorare’s welcome card set.

Newly enlisted managers get the opportunity to take part in Common-only tournaments and compete for Limited card rewards.

You may enter your first tournament with your free deck of cards by selecting “Upcoming” on the Sorare website after hovering over the “Play” button (you cannot join Live or Past tournaments because they are already underway or resolved).

Now that you’re in the “Play” section, choose the competition you wish to enter.

The final step to complete before you may participate in your first Sorare event is selecting your five-player lineup.

The players that are available for selection will be the ones you chose in the previous step. Don’t forget to pick those that you think will have the best probability of performing well in their next matches!

As seen in the illustration below, the starting lineup consists of five players: one for each position on the field and a fifth, extra player who may play any outfield position.

Sorare Onboarding Now vs Then

The onboarding process described above is still relatively fresh.

Up until 2023, instead of drafting your Common teams, Sorare used to present you with cards from clubs you marked as favorites in the registration process.

Hence, it was important to pick the most successful teams to give you the best chance of a great start to your Sorare career since the better the players, the bigger the chance they store high in their respective games.

Similar to now, there were 5 free-to-play tournaments.

However, unlike in the current onboarding version, you couldn’t compete in all competitions at once. Instead, you had to go through four different levels of what was known as Sorare academy.

Level 1: Academy Novice

The main requirement of the tournament was that you had 5 Common cards. It was allowed to have one Limited card in your 5-card line up which gave you a 40% score boost.

There were two challenges for you to complete in the Academy Novice.

Challenge number one required you to score 100 points in total from the five players you fielded in the lineup. This was a super-low threshold and most newbies succeeded at the first attempt.

Challenge number 2 was to score 50 points with a single player.  Also, this requirement wasn’t too difficult to meet.

After meeting both challenges, it was impossible to play Academy Novice again. Instead, you had to progress to the next newbie-friendly tournaments.

In terms of the rewards, Academy Novice was rewarding players based on points scored and not rankings. To win a Limited card in Academy Novice, your lineup had to accumulate more than 400 points which, being honest, was quite a task for a newbie.

Level 2: Academy Intermediate

After completing the challenges in the Academy Novice, you were allowed to enter Academy Intermediate.

Similar to the previous tournament, you were only allowed to participate in this one until you completed all the challenges.

In the case of this tournament, the number of challenges was 3.

• Rank in the top 50% of players 
• Score 1 goal, assist, or another decisive score with one player
• Score more than 50 points with your captain

Academy Intermediate increased the number of allowed Limited cards you could use in your lineup to 2.

When it comes to the rewards, they were again score-based. 

Similar to the Novice tournament, you had the chance to win a Tier 3 Limited card after reaching a 400-point threshold. However, you could have also won a Tier 2 Limited card if you had managed to score 450 points or more. Again, that wasn’t the easiest thing to do (unless you fielded 2 Limited cards which had their score increased by 40% each).

Level 3: Academy Proficient

The third on the stop of free tournaments was the Academy Proficient. You could have competed in this one after completing all the challenges in Academy Novice and Academy Intermediate.

In order to progress to the last stage of the Academy, you needed to complete the following challenges in the Proficient:

• Rank in the top 25% of players
• Score more than 20 All Around Score points with one player

When it comes to the rewards, the Proficiency mode had exactly the same thresholds as the preceding Intermediate. This meant that you had to score at least 400 points for a Tier 3 Limited card and 450 points or more for a Tier 2 Limited card.

What differentiated the two modes was the number of allowed Limited cards. Academy Proficient allowed up to 3 Limited cards whose score was increased by 40%. This made meeting the required thresholds much more probable.

Level 4: Academy Advanced

Advanced was the last stop of the Academy mode.

The challenges were the following:

• Win a Limited card
• Score one goal
• Score more than 25 All-Around Score points with one player

That essentially meant that you could have played this mode until you won a Limited card. That’s great!

In terms of the rewards, they were again score-based. However, on top of Tier 3 and Tier 2 Limited cards offered in the previous steps of the Academy, the Advanced Mode gave you the chance to win a Tier 1 Limited card.

Weekly Casual League

What was great about the previous form of the onboarding process is that after completing all the phases of the Academy, you didn’t have to start spending money to continue playing Sorare.

Sorare Casual league was the perfect place for all the managers that didn’t want or didn’t have money to spend to invest in the rarer cards.

The Casual tournament was played two times a week in two separate rounds, just like most other competitions.

The Casual tournament was probably the fairest on the whole platform since it allowed only Common, free-to-play cards, and all players participating in the tournament got a reward as long as they competed. This meant that all Sorare managers got a fair crack at winning card rewards and improving their lineups.

In terms of the rewards, most players that competed in the Casual League won more Common cards. However, a small portion of those participating got the chance to win Limited cards ranging from Tier 3 Limited up to Tier 1 Limited.

What differentiates the Casual and other free-to-play tournaments from the rarer card tournaments is that there are no cash prizes. Starting from Limited and going all the way up to Unique tournaments, you can win both card rewards and cash prizes paid out in Ethereum.

Although Sorare insists that the current path allows for easier progression amongst new Sorare managers, it’s debatable, to say the least.

Score-based rewards were much easier to win and the current free-to-play modes don’t offer any.

In contrast, finishing in the top 200 managers in order to win a Limited card in the current system, with more than one hundred thousand competing, is close to impossible.
