Can You Make Money on Sorare in 2023? (and How to Do It)

Last Updated:

Although Sorare is mostly used as a form of entertainment and past-time for sports enthusiasts, many people considering joining the platform ask themselves a question: can you make money on Sorare? (and if so, how can you make money on Sorare).

The short answer to this question is a resounding YES. And there are two main ways of doing it:

In this article, we will:

  • explore both options in great detail, evaluating how realistic the chance of making a profit both in the short and long term is (with real-life examples)
  • answer the nagging question “how much can you make on Sorare” (with precise numbers)
  • evaluate whether you can make money with zero investment
  • look at the risks associated with treating Sorare as a form of investment

Can You Make Money on Sorare? Overview

In my opinion, the healthiest approach toward Sorare is to treat it as a game. A game that you really want to get good at.

Only once you start having success on a regular basis should you decide whether you want to cash in on your great results or continue to reinvest your winnings and build an even stronger gallery.

Important update: beginning August 2023, you no longer need cryptocurrency to play Sorare thanks to the launch of the Cash Wallet 💳.

Like with any other game, Sorare takes time to get good at. The same applies to making a profit on the platform. Although there are users who are making extraordinary profits every week, newly-coming managers shouldn’t expect to be winning right away.

That’s why, to minimize the risk, I highly advise starting with minimum or even zero investment (yes, it is possible to play Sorare for free) and taking advantage of all the freebies new users can get (such as the free Limited card when using our sign up offer).

First, learn the mechanisms of the game, and then gradually increase the amounts you put into the platform.

I also encourage you to read as many articles on the game as possible, in contrast to what I did when I first started my adventure. Had I educated myself more before putting my money on the table, my gallery and overall profit would be in a much better place right now.

If you are new to the game, reading my Sorare review or the tutorial for beginners would be a great start.

As I already mentioned, it is absolutely possible to make money with Sorare but to be profitable, you have to use the right strategies.

Now, let’s take a look at the two main ways of scoring profit on the platform.

Make Money by Winning Rewards

Being successful in weekly competitions is the most obvious way of trying to make money on Sorare.

However, to have any type of success, you have to be a holder of the right cards. And more often than not, the right cards will require some investment on your side.

With that said, it is totally possible to win rewards even with budget-friendly players, as long as your scouting skills are on point (check my budget suggestions for Challenger Europe and Champion Europe divisions).

For you to actually be able to make money on Sorare, the reward needs to be tradeable. And as of now, all the cards you win on the platform are indeed available for trade on the Secondary Market.

Apart from cards, finishing high in the weekly leaderboards also lets you win money (in the form of Ethereum).

  • All competitions across all card scarcities have guaranteed cash rewards for those who finish on the podium (that’s on top of the Star Player card reward which usually you can say for a really good price)
  • All-Star competitions across all scarcities have cash rewards for up to the first 300 people in the leaderboards
  • Capped 240 competitions across all scarcities reward managers with cash for reaching the required points threshold; $5 in the Limited division, $50 in the Rare division, $250 in the Super Rare division, and $500 in the Unique division.

Okay, so by now you already know that you can make money on the platform by selling the assets (cards) you win, or simply stacking your cash winnings.

However, it’s important to understand that in order to truly consider yourself profitable on Sorare or any gaming platform, you need to achieve a positive return on investment (ROI). This means you need to make back more than you initially put in.

So, if your aim is to make money on Sorare by succeeding with your weekly lineups and winning cards or cash rewards, you might be wondering how much you need to invest before you can recoup 100% of your initial investment.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a definitive answer to that question, as it depends on the strategy you employ and the specific tournament you wish to participate in.

But let’s try and have a look at some possible routes.

Invest in a Threshold Team

In my opinion, a positive ROI can be achieved the quickest by creating the right squad of players to compete in the Cap 240 mode, also known as the threshold mode.

As you already learned above, winning prizes in this competition doesn’t require you to finish above tens of thousands of people – unlike most other tournaments.

Instead, the only requirement you need to meet in order to get a guaranteed cash prize is to hit a threshold of 250 points with your lineup.

What I really like about this mode is that it doesn’t require you to invest a fortune. In fact, buying pricey players is a very wasteful idea since the competition has a limit of 240 points that you can distribute amongst your cards. In other words, the sum of your players’ average scores from the last 15 games can’t exceed 240. This equals an average of 48 points per player.

The above means that you shouldn’t be targeting high performers since you wouldn’t be able to fit them in your lineup anyway.

Instead, you should actually scout players that are, for the most part, literally average.

When it comes to this mode, my golden rule is to look for cards with an average last 15 (L15) score between 40-55. This gives me a bit of breathing space and allows me to take other things into consideration when building my lineups, such as the difficulty of the player’s fixture, whether the player likes playing at home or away, and their scoring history against the upcoming opponents.

Of course, the amount of money you have to put in the threshold mode will also depend on which division you want to target. Do you want to learn your trade with the most affordable Limited cards or go for more demanding Divisions starting from Rare and ending up with the Unique?

If you are a new user or are about to register on Sorare, my advice is the same all the time – start with minimal investment into Limiteds and then as you get better at the game, work your way up the ladder.

One of the cool things about the Capped 240 mode is that you can pick players from around the globe and are not restricted to specific, often pricey competitions. You can find some real bargains for basically all positions in your team. The goalkeeper is not an exception to the rule.

When scouting for players, I always try to come up with the most reliable performers with the least volatile scores. This is especially crucial when it comes to the threshold mode.

That’s why instead of looking at the last 15 games, I always look at the bigger picture that can span throughout the whole season and pick the average score from the last 40 matches.

So now, taking the above tips into consideration, let’s try to come up with a Limited threshold team to evaluate how much you need to put on the table, and what is the realistic timeframe of getting your investment back and starting to profit from the game.

Buying a Goalkeeper = $13

When selecting a goalkeeper, it’s crucial that you avoid buying goalies in bottom-tier teams that concede a lot of goals. Remember that three or more goals conceded by your keeper result in a negative decisive score (-20 points). More often than not, this will kill your lineup.

As long as your goalie delivers a score of 30+ points, you’re in with a good chance of meeting the threshold since other players in the lineup will be able to make up for this. A clean sheet for your goalkeeper (resulting in plus 25 points) is a bit of a lottery so you should treat it as a bonus instead of banking on it when creating your lineup.

The goalie I pick for the exemplary lineup is Aarón Escandell. The Spaniard, currently playing for Cartagena in Spanish La Liga 2, ticks all the boxes we want in a threshold goalkeeper:

  • He starts every game he’s fit (90% from L40)
  • Isn’t shy of a clean sheet (14 in L40)
  • He rarely concedes more than two goals (6 in L40)
  • He’s budget-friendly (around $13 at the time of writing)

His average score from the last 15 games is 48. Not too high but also really decent for a goalkeeper. The sweet spot for a threshold team.

Buying a Defender = $2

The good news is that after buying a threshold goalkeeper, you have already dealt with your biggest expense. Outfielders are nearly always less expensive when it comes to the threshold mode.

You can get a really solid player in the form of Roberto Pier for around two bucks.

The Levante defender is someone you could really rely on throughout the season:

  • He’s a regular starter (84% of starts from the last 40 games)
  • A solid performer all-around (L5 = 54, L15 = 54, L40 = 50)
  • Can deliver high scores without Decisive Actions

Buying a Midfielder = $1

If you thought that the defender pick was cheap, then you are in for a nice surprise with our midfielder.

Yet again we are shopping in the Second Division Market, this time swooping for Fabian Kunze from German side Hannover 96. He’s the definition of the average player we are looking for when assembling our threshold team.

  • Starts most games (83% from L40)
  • OK scores (L5 = 53, L15 = 46, L40 = 44)
  • Ultra cheap

Buying a Forward = $4

Just like in the case of goalkeepers, forwards are usually a bit more expensive because there are simply fewer of them than midfielders and defenders.

However, this shouldn’t stop us from getting a really budget-friendly forward player. And this is what I have done with Isac Lidberg.

The Swedish striker is playing his trade in the Dutch Eredivisie at Go Ahead Eagles.

  • A guaranteed starter (98% starts from last 40 games)
  • Average scores around the 50-point mark (L15 = 48)
  • Ultra affordable for a forward

Extra Player = $2

Last but not least, we have to complete our lineup with an extra outfield player (any position but the goalkeeper).

When it comes to the threshold mode, my favorite players for the extra position are midfielders. They are cheap and are not so much influenced by what other players in the team do.

Peter Michorl is the second player from the Challenger Europe division, representing LASK from the Austrian Bundesliga.

  • Another regular starter (83% from last 40)
  • Very solid L40 score (51) but poorer L15 (44)

Of all the players included in our team, he’s the weakest L15 performer but his points tally perfectly supplements the five-player team.

Threshold Team Cost & ROI

The approximate cost of the Caps 240 team we have just assembled is $23 (0,0119 Ethereum).

Investment in Cap 240 Team

Using the Concept Builder feature on SorareData, we can now easily check the scores of this team when all the cards are played together.

Remember that to get a positive ROI, we need this team to meet the 250 points threshold five times.

The team produced an over 100% ROI over the course of the season

As you can see in the image above, the five players we selected had a 250-point-or-more score five times throughout last season. This implies that you can start making a profit from your investment after less than a year.

Was also worth mentioning, is that with some of these scores, on top of the cash prizes, you would have also won some card rewards which consequently would have further boosted your profit.

Using the strategy above, you can recreate my simulation by checking the cost of other teams you would like to create. Remember that what you see above is just an example and there are definitely player combinations that would have returned your money quicker.

You can even try different scarcity divisions. However, keep in mind that the higher you go in the scarcity levels, the bigger the investment required – but also the higher the threshold prizes.

Maximum Profits from Threshold Teams

So, how much can you make on Sorare by simply playing the threshold competition?

Assuming that you have money to burn and you can afford to assemble a threshold team across all scarcity levels, we can easily estimate what would be the maximum amount of money you could make on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

Please remember that there are two separate game weeks nested inside every week on Sorare. That means that you get the chance to win the threshold prizes eight times a month. Multiply that by 4 (four scarcity levels, each with its own Cap mode).

Please refer to the infographic below for a clear representation of the earnings potential.

Weekly, monthly, and annual profits you can make on Sorare
Possible profits you can make by participating in the Cap 240 mode

As you can see, there is a fair bit of money out for grabs for those who are good at the game and have some money to invest in the first place.

Of course, it is highly unlikely there will ever be a person who wins all threshold prizes throughout the year. Even the really good players with bigger galleries struggle to reach thresholds in all eight game weeks in the month, never mind 96 game weeks in a year.

However, at least theoretically, the maximum amount you could win from the threshold competitions during a year is a staggering $76,620. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be disappointed with a 1/10 of that.

For more information and strategies regarding the threshold mode, check out the following article: Capped 240 on Sorare.

Invest in the Best Cards

Some people don’t get enough of a thrill from securing average scores and banking threshold cash prizes from the Cap 240 competitions.

Some just want to start competing with the best possible cards right away.

So how long would it take for you to start profiting from your investment if you decided to buy the very best players to compete in the most star-flooded competitions?

Using the same concept-building technique I presented above, we will now pick the five best-scoring cards to enter the most competitive tournament on the platform, Sorare All-Star, and estimate how long would it take to get our investment back.

One of the best (and most expensive) player combinations for the All Star

I used the word estimate on purpose because in this case, we will be getting our money back mostly from card rewards that we then proceed to sell. Remember that in every Gameweek around 1-2% of top managers in the All-Star also get cash rewards (the higher the place, the bigger the amount).

Teams with Star performers win rewards on a frequent basis

As you can see in the image above, the cost of the top-tier players is incomparably higher to those needed for the threshold mode. Furthermore, the value of the cards we win will of course differ so it’s much harder to predict the exact time frame to see a positive ROI.

Cap 240 Team vs Best Card Team

After evaluating both options above, it’s clear to see that a more obvious and less risky path to getting a return on investment (and then profiting) from the game is to build a low-budget team that will be competing in the threshold (Cap 240) competition.

When fielding your lineups in the Cap 240 mode, you are essentially not competing against other players but against yourself. As long as you reach that threshold, you can pick up your cash reward and move forward.

Remember that the threshold mode also rewards around 10% of the best players every week with cards.

Combining both types of prizes, it’s fairly realistic to expect profiting within the first season.

Make Money by Trading Cards

You don’t necessarily have to be a massive fan of the gameplay and spend hours creating your lineups in the hope that they will score enough points to win rewards.

Although they make up a relatively small percentage of the whole userbase, card traders do exist and can do pretty well on the platform, some making quite ridiculous profits (an example of such a trader is the notorious PawelTrader).

Many traders would even argue that it’s easier to make money on Sorare by trading cards and not buying them solely to enter weekly competitions.

So, how to make money on Sorare by trading and not playing cards?

Making money on Sorare by trading

Like with any other form of exchange, the Sorare card marketplace rewards those who buy low and sell high. You need to know the right moment to pick up the player and have the courage to sell him when the time comes.

Quite frankly, there are just as many trading as there are gameplay strategies. I will explore the most common below.

Investing in injured stars

Investing in injured star players can be a safe and successful trading option on Sorare.

Take Kylian Mbappe as a prime example. When he’s fit, he’s undeniably a key player and would never be left on the bench. As one of the world’s best players, he’s guaranteed a spot in any football team.

The strategy of investing in injured players tends to be profitable, but it works best for medium to long-term injuries. If a player is only going to miss one game, the price difference won’t be significant.

However, if the prognosis indicates a prolonged absence from the game, the demand for those players will inevitably decrease, leading to a drop in prices. Once the player recovers from the injury, you can list them on the secondary market and expect substantial profits.

Usually, the star players are the ones that hold their value the best so you shouldn’t expect to make a gigantic profit. However, it’s absolutely realistic to expect a 15-20% price increase once the player is available for selection again.

Investing in young talents

Investing in young talents can also be a solid strategy, especially if you’re comfortable with long-term trading.

Look for promising young players who are on the verge of breaking into the first team. If you have good knowledge of a particular league and its emerging talents who are not yet regular starters, you have an advantage.

These young players, marked with the Under 23 sticker, are highly valued due to their long-term potential in the game. Once they start getting regular playing time, their prices will skyrocket, providing an ideal opportunity to sell.

This strategy can be especially profitable with Under 23 goalkeepers. This is because the number of young goalies that start games is really small and the demand is high. If you can spot a young goalkeeper that is on the verge of breaking into the team and invest early, you might be in for a treat.

Banking on favorable transfers

For those who keep up with transfer rumors or have reliable sources in the football world, investing in players about to change clubs can offer a competitive edge. Keep an eye on players who are rumored to be leaving their current teams in the near future.

However, not all transfer deals will be profitable on Sorare. A player’s price will only increase if their chances of earning high points after the transfer improve.

The most popular scenarios for profitable transfers are when a player moves from a medium-to-bottom tier club to a top club in the same league or when they move from a strong league to a club in a lesser league where scoring high points is easier.

It’s ideal to buy these players just before the transfer becomes widely known and sell them when the deal is officially announced.

End-of-season discounts

Another opportunity for profitable trades is at the end of the season. As the season comes to a close, prices tend to drop because the cards have little to no utility.

This is when you can take advantage of the end-of-season discount phase to purchase cards at lower prices. Later, when the new season begins, you can try reselling those cards for a profit.

Making Money With Zero Investment

I hope that by now you have at least a couple of ideas of how to make money with Sorare and can evaluate how much of an investment is required for you to be successful with your plan.

However, what if you don’t want to spend a dime? What if you want to be a true rags-to-riches story? Is it possible to play Sorare for free and gradually build up your gallery to compete for the best prizes?

Theoretically, it is.

In fact, Sorare is advertised as a free-to-play game and it doesn’t require you to put in any money to enjoy some of the perks.

However, hoping to build your gallery of cards just by participating in the free-to-play mode is an extremely difficult not to say nearly impossible task.

This is because you are competing against literally hundreds of thousands of managers in the free-to-play tournaments which, I’m looking at the crazy number of participants, offer very few Limited card rewards.

Is Sorare a Risky Investment?

Like any investment, Sorare carries some level of risk. Here are a few factors to consider when evaluating the risk associated with Sorare:

  1. Volatility: As with any investment involving cryptocurrencies or blockchain-based assets, Sorare’s value can be highly volatile. The prices of digital collectible cards on the platform can fluctuate based on market demand, player performance, and the overall popularity of the game.
  2. Regulatory Environment: The regulatory landscape surrounding blockchain technology and digital assets is still evolving in many countries. Changes in regulations could potentially impact the usability and value of Sorare’s digital collectibles.
  3. Market Adoption: Sorare’s success relies on widespread adoption and engagement from football fans and collectors. While the platform has gained attention and partnerships with major football clubs, the long-term growth and sustainability of the game will depend on attracting a significant user base.

It’s extremely important to assess your risk tolerance before considering any investment in Sorare or any other similar blockchain-based collectible game.

Can you make Money on Sorare: CONCLUSION

There are two main paths to do so:

To win rewards, it’s important to scout for budget-friendly players with the potential to score well and avoid overpriced cars. Rewards can include tradeable cards and cash prizes, obtained through podium finishes and high leaderboard placements.

For those interested in card trading, various strategies can be employed. Investing in injured star players, young talents, players undergoing favorable transfers, and taking advantage of end-of-season discounts can all be profitable approaches. The key is to buy low and sell high in the card marketplace.

With all the obvious positives to the platform, it’s important to consider the risks associated with Sorare as an investment.
